A number of mobile devices support Miracast, a new wireless display standard that allows you to stream content directly to your TV. Unlike Google’s Chromecast, which grabs content from the cloud and streams it when you hit a button on your phone or tablet, Miracast displays a complete mirror of your device’s display whether you’re swiping through your home screens, surfing the Web, playing a game or watching a movie. Though there are still few set-top boxes and even fewer TVs that can receive a Miracast signal, several Android Mini PCs offer this important capability.

In just a few simple steps you can turn your Android Mini PC into a Miracast wireless display dongle for your TV and connect it to an Android phone or tablet.

Android Mini PC: To find out if you can use Miracast on your mini PC, look for a program called “WifiDisplay” in your app menu. If it’s not present , you may need a custom ROM or you may not be able to do Miracast at this time. However, most of the quad-core and many of the dual-core Android sticks support Miracast.

Android Phones / Tablets: The Nexus 4 and new Nexus 7 provide Miracast support as does theASUS MeMO Pad HD 7, the new Moto X phone and the 2013 Motorola Droid series. The Wi-Fi alliance maintains an extensive, but not complete list of Miracast-capable devices. If your phone has a wireless display option under Settings > Display, it does Miracast.

Set Up Miracast on Your Android Stick

1. Launch the WifiDisplay app on your Android stick.

2. Click Setting. A dialog box appears asking you to rename your device.

3. Rename the device to something memorable such as Android Stick and click Ok.

4. Select Wi-Fi from the Settings Menu on your Android phone (or tablet).

5. Select Wi-Fi Direct from the menu.

6. Select Rename Device and enter an intuitive name for your phone such as “My Nexus 4.”

7. Select Display from the Settings Menu on your phone.

8. Select the Wireless Display submenu.

9. Toggle Wireless Display to On.

10. Tap Search for Displays. The phone should then show the name of your Android stick. If it does not appear right away, you may have to tap Search more than once.

11. Click the WiFiDisplay apps’s search button on your Android stick. The name of your phone (ex: Nexus 4) should appear under a list of Peer devices.

12. Tap on the name of the Android stick and wait patiently while it connects.If it doesn’t connect, toggle your Wi-Fi on and off and try again. It may take a couple of tries.

After successfully connecting, your phone will be paired with the stick and you should be able to connect the two just by tapping on the Android stick name from the phone’s wireless display menu. To disconnect, pull down the notification drawer on your phone and tap disconnect.

Unfortunately, when we connected a Nexus 4 phone with a CX-919 quad-core Android mini PC using Miracast, videos and games were a bit jerky. However, sound was smooth and still images such as Web pages or photos from our gallery were sharp and flawless while navigating around the UI was smooth. Your results may vary.

Making affordable computing has always been our vision. Our founder - Young Song has successfully co-founded eMachines, the low-cost computer brand that pioneered affordable PC ownership and Internet adoption for consumers, and NComputing that leverages PC power and cloud computing to create a shared computing resource that connects multiple users at a low cost. Designing projects and working with manufacturers to bring out products to the masses is in our blood. - Regulatory certification (e.g. CE, FCC)
We expect MiiPC will be shipped worldwide through the Kickstarter project. We will be required to go through necessary regulatory certifications such as CE and FCC for the regional market. Though we are familiar with the regulatory certification process, there could be risks that the certification may take longer than expect, which could potentially cause project delay.

- Procurement delay in certain electronic components
We have finalized our hardware bill-of-material for the MiiPC platform. Depends on the initial shipping volume, different electronic components may have different lead-time for different volume purchase. There could be risks that certain components may experience longer lead time than expected and potentially cause project delay.

가정용 안드로이드 PC "MiiPC" 구매, 설치/사용기

국내 제조의 잇점으로 Kickstarter를 통한 주문이후 전세계 최초 수령 리뷰기

제가 Kickstarter를 통해 가정용 안드로이드 PC를 표방한 MiiPC를 발견한 것은 지난 3월 어느날 이었습니다.

평소 주변사람들에게 애플빠로 불려지던 만큼, 애플이 출시한 IT Gadget이라면 심지어 아직 국내에는 출시되지 않은 2세대 Apple TV까지 구입하고는, 국내에서는 큰 제약을 받을 수 밖에 없는 애플의 유료 컨텐츠 활용에 대한 자가 해결책으로, 본래 앱 설치가 허용되지 않던 것에 Jailbreak 통해 XBMC, Plex Client 등의 멀티미디어 플레이어를 설치해 영화 및 음악 컨텐츠가 모아진 Home NAS와 연동시키며 거실에서 영화 및 음악 감상용 디바이스로 충분히 활용하고 있었지요.
물론 Jailbreak된 Apple TV에 추가로 Webkit 기반의 Couch Surfer Pro 브라우저까지 설치해 간혹 웹브라이징을 시도해 보았으나 본래 이를 감안하여 설계된 디바이스가 아니기에 256MB란 제한된 메모리내에서 원하는 속도로 제대로된 브라우징을 기대하기 어려웠으며, 이는 현재 사용중인 LG 3D 스마트 TV에서도 마찬가지였습니다.

그러던 중 발견한 MiiPC는 저렴한 가격의 안드로이드 PC이기에 상대적으로 훨씬 빠른 CPU와 2GB의 DDR3 SDRAM을 시스템 메모리, 그리고 8GB라는 내장 스토리지 메모리를 보유하고 있기에, 웹 브라우징 뿐만 아니라 다양한 앱을 자유롭게 사용할 수 있다는 기대감에서 구매를 선택하게 된 것이지요.
( 이제 Kickstarter를 통한 주문은 더 이상 허용되지 않고 공식 웹사이트를 통한 pre-order만이 가능한데, miipc.com를 통해 확인할 수 있듯이 1GB RAM, 4GB Flash를 가진 베이직 모델이 이 가격이고, 2GB RAM, 8GB Flash를 지닌 프리미엄 모델의 경우 149불을 지불해야만 합니다. )

이들의 웹사이트에서 "Power to the Parents"라는 간결한 문구로 제품을 안내하고 있는 바와 같이, 가족 구성원 별로 설치된 앱에 사용권한 및 이용 시간을 부모/보호자가 철저히 통제할 수 있도록 설계되고, 추가로 스마트폰에서 컴패니언 앱을 통해 사용 내역을 모니터링하고 콘트롤 할 수 있도록 한 점은, 자녀의 지나친 PC 사용을 염려하는 저같은 부모에게 또다른 매력으로 작용했습니다.

이렇게 구매를 결정하고 지난 3월28일 킥스타터를 통해 주문을 했을때만 하더라도 본 제품의 예상 배송일은 올 8월이었습니다. 이후 흰색과 메탈릭 실버 컬러 외에 분홍과 검정색이 선택가능한 색상 옵션으로 추가되고, 2개였던 USB 포트가 3개로 늘어나고, 다시 9.99달러에 1GB RAM, 4GB Flash를 2GB RAM, 8GB Flash로 업그레이드 시켜주는 과정이 이어지면서 그 기다림의 지루함을 또다른 재미로 만들어 주고 있었지요.

헌데, 지난 6월말 칩셋업체의 특정 소프트웨어 컴포넌트 문제로 그 배송일정을 한달 늦춘 9월로 변경한다는 메일을 받았고, 안전에 관련한 FCC/CE의 인증에 소요되는 시간과 무선랜/블루투스 모듈업체의 지연으로 또 한번 생산일자가 늦추어지면서 한두차례 더 배송이 늦추어지면서, 우여곡절 끝에 지난 금요일(10월 11일)에 받게 제품을 배송받게 되었습니다.

그동안 MiiPC 관련하여 킥스타터의 메일을 통해 알게된 MiiPC 주문 고객 현황을 보면, 미국을 필두로 영국, 캐나다, 호주, 독일 등 Top 5 국가를 포함 전체 55개 국가에서 주문이 이루어졌으며, 그중 한국고객은 1%에 지나지 않았었는데, MiiPC의 제조가 대한민국에서 이루어진 만큼 결국 그 1%의 한국 고객이 여타국가의 신청자들에 비해 적어도 1주일은 먼저 제품을 받아볼 수 있게 된 것이었기에 더욱 의미있는 전세계 최초 수령이 되었고, 그로부터 이틀이 지난 오늘 SNS를 통해 공유하는 이 글이 역시 전세계 최초 리뷰가 될 수도 있다는 생각도 하게 됩니다.
회사로 배송된 MiiPC 제품은 간결하면서도 깔끔하고 안전하게 포장이 되어 있었는데, 그 구성 설명은 제가 아이폰으로 찍은 아래 사진으로 대신 합니다.

한가로운 토요일 오후, 오랜 IT 경력과 스마트 디바이스 활용경험을 자신하며 제품 박스에 포함된 가이드도 스킵한 채 MiiPC를 거실의 TV에 연결해 설치에 들어간 저는, 그저 단지 애플 블루투스 키보드만을 곁에 준비하고 LG 3D SmartTV에 HTMI 케이블로 연결후 전면 우측상단에 위치한 전원 버튼을 눌렀습니다.

그러자, 초기 설정을 안내하는 위저드 화면이 펼쳐졌는데, 그제서야 저는 블루투스 키보드를 MiiPC와 패어링할 방법이 없음을 깨달았습니다. 그래서 뒤늦게 USB 포트에 연결할 키보드와 마우스를 찾았습니다. 헌데, 이게 왠일 집엔 블루투스 키보드와 마우스, 그리고는 PS/2 포트에 꼽는 키보드만 보이고... 그래서 허둥지는 오래전 PMP용으로 사용했던 USB 인터페이스를 가진 접히는 Targus 키보드와 노트북용 USB 마우스를 준비하고 MiiPC 뒷면에 연결했지요. 헌데, 그 인식시간때문이지 제가 몇차례 연달아 누른 Enter키와 마우스 버튼으로 인해 미쳐 그 내용을 읽지도 못한채 초기 설정 위저드는 마무리되어 버리는 사고가 생기고 말았습니다.

그로 인해 WiFi 설정은 하지도 못해 인터넷 접속도 안되고 Screen Calibration(화면조정)도 이루어지지 못해 화면의 귀퉁이가 다 잘려나간채 설정 화면으로 재진입도 되지 못하는 MiiPC 화면만을 멍하니 바라보는 바보같은 상황이 벌어진 것이죠.

결국 문제 해결을 위해 택배 배송을 위해 알게된 MiiPC 국내 제조 담당자의 휴대폰으로 토요일임에도 전화를 드리고, 그분이 미국에 있는 엔지니어에게 연락해서 저에게 전화걸도록 조치해 주심으로써 저의 의도하지 않은 좌충우돌 설치 과정은 마무리 되었습니다.

미국 현지시간 금요일 밤 늦은 시간임에도 불구하고 문제해결을 위해 전화로 성심성의껏 지원해주었던 Richard Sah에게 고맙다는 말을 남기고 싶네요.

그리고 위 글 내에서 설명했지만, 위에 공유된 Evernote 링크를 클릭하지 않은 분을 위해 중요한 화면 조정에 대해 다시 한번 언급하고자 합니다.

HDMI 인터페이스가 있는 고해상도 HD 16:9 비율의 최신 컴퓨터 모니터에 MiiPC를 연결하지 않았거나 거실의 LCD/LED TV에 연결해사용하실 경우에는 반드시 화면을 조정해 사용중인 TV 스크린에 최적화 시키는 작업이 우선되어야 합니다.

이는 Setting Menu > Display 를 통해서 선택할 수 있는데, Screen Calibration 메뉴로 진입하면 스크린 상단부터 시계방향으로 돌면서 각각의 면을 화살표를 이용해 최적의 상황으로 조절하게 됩니다.

일례로 화면 상단을 실제 스크린의 상단과 일치시키려면, 이 Calibration 과정에서 키보드의 아래 화살표를 계속 눌러 아래로 화면상단에 파란색 면이 끌어당겨지는 순간을 포착합니다. 그런다음 다시 위 화살표키를 눌러 이 파란색 상자가 보이지 않고 화면 위로 밀려올라가도록 조정하여, 이 상화좌우 스크린의 끝면에 파란색이 정확히 일치되어 사라지는 위치를 잡아주도록 합니다. (말로 표현하니 어려운데, 제 글을 읽고 실제 작업을 해보면 쉽게 이해하실 수 있을 것입니다.)

이제 이렇게 화면 위치 조정 작업이 최적으로 이루어진 이후에는, 어떤 화면도 잘려나가는 경우없이 TV에서 MiiPC를 즐길 수 있습니다.
