Google developers got a peek at a Project Ara prototype on Thursday, an early look at the modular phone project Google initially announced in February.
Paul Eremenko, the head of Project Ara, said that the prototype was "tethered to a laboratory bench" a few weeks ago, but the team has since removed that tether to test the phone's features.
When Eremenko brought the prototype on stage during a breakout session ofGoogle I/O at San Francisco's Moscone Center and flashed the Android bootup screen, the audience went wild. Ultimately, the phone failed to fully load (though the crowd cheered anyway), and Eremenko said plenty of challenges lie ahead for Ara, including the challenge of building the tech into a beautiful design for consumers.

"The [design] must overcome the connotations of boxiness and brick-like that people associate with modularity," he said. Google is working with New Deal Design to handle the challenge; Eremenko said he wants the phone to be smooth and sleek, but also wants to celebrate — not conceal — its modularity.
Google's prototype is clearly a long way off, design-wise. It appeared to be both boxy and brick-like, although previous design previews are a lot nicer.

Google isn't keeping the phone's design in-house. Eremenko also announced Project Ara's first developer prize competition on Thursday. Interested teams must submit a working module to Google by Sept. 1, and the winning team will take home a $100,000 prize.
Eremenko says that this is just the first in a series of developer competitions surrounding Ara, although he didn't share more details about future competitions.

Google had no shortage of announcements during its almost-three-hour developers conference on Wednesday. Some announcements, like Android Wear and Android L, were expected; others took us by surprise and played out differently than anticipated.
Just in case you didn't watch the full conference, we've rounded up some of the biggest highlights, below.
Android L
Google appears to be ditching its dessert theme with the latest version of Android, simply called Android L, which will roll out to users in the fall. (A preview version is available to developers now.)
One of L's biggest features is the platform's new design language, Material Design, which will run across Android phones and tablets, Chrome OS, smartwatches and the web.
Android L also comes with some serious performance enhancements, promising to bring "PC-like gaming" to phones and tablets and new controls to optimize battery life. Notifications also got a much-needed overhaul; users will be able to read and dismiss notifications directly from their device's lock screen.
Speaking of the lock screen, Android L also integrates with Android Wear-powered smartwatches to authenticate your identity. This means

The company also announced a new initiative, Android One, aimed at bringing high quality affordable devices to developing countries like India.
Android Wear
Google's platform for smartwatches and other wearables will integrate with Android L and Android TV. When downloading a new app to your phone, for example, the Android Wear version of the app will automatically download onto your device. Subsequent app updates will also be automatically downloaded.

Notifications on Android Wear are designed to display only the most relevant and important information at any given moment. Notifications will come from the apps on your phone and smartwatch, as well as contextual alerts from Google Now. If you get a new notification on your phone, such as an incoming text message, your watch will vibrate and a card will display a preview of the message.
Notifications are also "glanceable," much like those recently added to Google Glass. This means you can interact with them by simply raising your wrist.
The platform also has the ability to track fitness stats like your daily steps and your heart rate, provided your watch supports those features. The first Android Wear-powered devices— LG's G and Samsung's Gear Live smartwatch— are both available now, and Motorola's Moto 360 will go on sale later this summer.
Android Auto
Google has finally brought Android to the car with Android Auto, the company's connected-car platform not unlike Apple's CarPlay.

The system is completely voice-enabled and allows you to cast navigation, communication and music apps from your phone to your car's dashboard. Voice commands, enabled by Google Now, allow you to send and receive text messages, get directions and make phone calls with only voice commands.
The company already has more than 40 partners for the system via its Open Automotive Alliance, launched earlier this year. Android Auto's launch will coincide with the rollout of Android L later this year, but developers will soon be able to start building their own apps for the car with the Android Auto SDK, which will be "published soon."
Android TV
Google unveiled Android TV, which combines live TV, Android apps and Google Play services.
The platform emphasizes easy searching and supports voice-enabled searching. Searches can also be controlled via an Android Wear-powered smartwatch.

Android TV also supports Google Cast, meaning it will function much like a Chromecast, allowing you to cast content from your phone or tablet to your set. Speaking of Chromecast, Google also announced a few major improvements to its streaming dongle.
You no longer need to connect to the same Wi-Fi network to use a Chromecast, meaning you can easily connect someone else's device to your television without sharing your Wi-Fi password and network information. Chromecast will also support mirroring between your television and phone or tablet.
Google is partnering with Sony and Sharp to develop Android TV-supported sets and Razer and Asus to make gaming specific set-top boxes.
Chromebooks
Google appears to be pushing to bring Chrome OS and Android closer together to create a more unified experience between to the two platforms.
Android notifications, and eventually native Android apps, will be coming to Chromebooks. The notifications feature will allow you to view incoming call, text message and battery level notifications directly on your desktop. Native Android applications will follow and we got a brief preview of native versions of Vine, Flipboard and Evernote running on a Chromebook.
The effort is still in "early days" of development, it's not yet clear when we'll see more than just a preview of the feature.
Google Fit

Google also unveiled Google Fit, its new platform for tracking health and fitness information. The platform will be open to developers and an SDK will be made available in the coming weeks.
Fit will serve as a hub for all your health and fitness data and will take advantage of data collected by sensors on your phones and wearable devices to provide relevant recommendations. Early partners include Noom, Nike+, Addidas, Basis, Runtastic, RunKeeper, Polar, Withings, HTC and Motorola.

7월 25일에 출시되는 파이어폰의 가격은 2년 약정 계약시 32기가바이트 모델이 199달러(약 20만원), 64기가바이트 모델이 299달러(약 30만원)로 책정됐다. 애플 아이폰5S의 같은 용량 모델과 비교하면 각각 100달러(약 10만원)가 저렴한 수준이다. 가격에 민감한 소비자들을 공략하기에 유리한 이점이 될 수도 있다. 아마존 웹사이트에 따르면 약정 계약을 맺지 않을 경우, 가격은 649~749달러(약 65만원~75만원)이다.베조스 CEO에 따르면 파이어폰에는 4.7인치 스크린, 1300만 화소 카메라, 꼬임 방지 이어폰이 적용됐다. 스크린 사이즈가 아이폰보다 약간 더 크다.

Google's device will carry another company's brand, but will be powered by Google's new Android TV software designed to play movies, games and other content on televisions, the people said. Users will be able to control the box using Android smartphones or tablets, and potentially other devices. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment. The details suggest that Google's television strategy will be similar to its smartphone strategy, providing key software to hardware makers to power their devices. Google has said it would follow the same playbook for wearable devices like smartwatches, the first of which are expected to be shown off at the conference. Those will be powered by another flavor of Android software called Android Wear. It isn't clear if Google plans to design its own version of a set-top box running Android TV similar to its Nexus line of smartphones and tablets that are powered by Android. Each Android device presents another opportunity for Google to display ads, its primary way of generating revenue. To support its new operating systems like Android Wear and Android TV, Google needs to court software developers to build apps that will appeal to consumers. This won't be Google's first effort at a set-top box. Since 2010, it has offered Google TV through device makers such as Logitech, Sony, Vizio and Asus. In 2012, it introduced the Nexus Q, its own streaming-media player, which never made it to the mass market. Google's one successful TV play has been the Chromecast, a $35 dongle that lets users stream Internet video using smartphones, tablets and computers running the Chrome browser as remote controls. The Android TV pitch is expected to include a focus on videogames, which are among the most popular apps on smartphones. One key feature according to a developer who has been briefed on Google's plans will be games that work seamlessly between mobile devices and televisions. For instance, a user playing a game on an Android smartphone while commuting might be able to resume the game on an Android-powered television at home. Android games and other apps built for TVs are also expected to take advantage of larger screens, for instance split-screen, multiplayer games will be offered according to a person who has seen one such game being developed. 소문대로 그는 매우 특이한 자세로 연주하고 있음을 확인할 수 있는데, 그는 바른 자세로 앉아 몸도 거의 움직이지 않고, 손가락을 모두 쭉 편 채 손바닥이 건반에 닿을 정도로 해서 건반을 두드리고, 피아노 페달도 거의 사용하지 않습니다. 때로 건반 하나하나를 손가락 끝이 보이지 않을 정도로 빠르게 치고 있는 것을 보고 있으면, 일흔다섯이라는 나이가 믿기지 않을 정도입니다.
피아노 협주곡 가운데 세계 3대 난곡 중의 하나인 라흐마니노프의 <피아노 협주곡 3번>이 일반인들에게 널리 알려지게 된 계기는 <샤인>이란 영화를 통해서였습니다. <샤인>은 호주 출신의 피아니스트인 데이비드 헬프갓의 실화를 바탕으로 만들어진 영화인데, 1947년생인 헬프갓은 열 살 때 이미 피아노 신동으로 알려졌고, 당시 세계적인 연주자들로부터 해외 유학을 권유받았을 정도로 실력이 뛰어났습니다.
아들의 뛰어난 피아노 실력에 강한 자부심과 애정을 가지고 있었음에도 불구하고, 외국 유학을 권유하는 음악가들의 말을 듣지 않고 곁에만 두려고 했던 폴란드계 유대인인 아버지. 나치 치하에서 부모, 형제를 모두 잃었던 과거를 가지고 있었던 아버지였기에, 아들과 떨어지고 싶지 않았던 마음이 아들의 유학을 그토록 반대하도록 만들었을지 모릅니다.
하지만 그런 아버지의 반대를 뿌리치고, 장학금을 받아 영국 왕립음악원으로 유학을 강행했던 헬프갓. 영화 속의 팍스 교수는 헬프갓에게서 피아니스트로서의 천부적인 재능을 발견하고는, 사랑을 가지고 헬프갓을 가르치고 돌봅니다.
헬프갓을 가르쳤던 스승 시릴 스미스는 “낭만적인 거장 리스트와 라흐마니노프와 같은 작품들을 연주할 때의 그의 재능은 거의 천재의 경지에 올라 있으며, 개성적인 면에서나 테크닉적인 면에서나 호로비츠와 같은 수준”이라고 헬프갓의 연주를 평했습니다.

라흐마니노프의 <피아노 협주곡 3번>은 기교나 감성 면에서 매우 어려운 곡이었기에, 뛰어난 피아니스트라도 제대로 연주하기가 어려워, 비평가들 사이에 ‘작곡가이면서 탁월한 피아니스트인 라흐마니노프만이 연주할 수 있다’는 말이 있었을 정도였습니다. 라흐마니노프가 다른 사람들에 비해 유난히 큰 손을 가지고 있었다고 하지만, 그의 곡은 ‘미치지 않고서는 연주할 수 없는 곡’이었을지 모릅니다(영화 <샤인>에서 헬프갓이 졸업연주회 때 이 곡을 연주하겠다고 하자, 팍스 교수가 놀라면서 했던 말처럼).

Google Project Ara gets a release date from its creators and a price tag starting with 50 dollars for the base phone as the phone is set for a release early 2015. For 50 bucks you’d only get a bare bones Project Ara endoskeleton and not even a display and have to add and buy more parts to complete the build-it-yourself next generation phone.
For smartphone enthusiasts: the new Phonebloks concept will be made real powered by Motorola. The new Google phone rumors might be possible with their "Project Ara."
The Phonebloks was conceptualized by Dave Hakkens who begged phone companies to create a phone wherein users will have the freedom to choose what features they want for their phones.
"Our goal is to drive a more thoughtful, expressive, and open relationship between users, developers, and their phones. To give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it's made of, how much it costs, and how long you'll keep it," Motorola said on their website blog.
With a display screen at front, the backside has a number of hardware outlets wherein you can customize how your phone can perform.
For example you wanted extra battery life, you can put more batteries on your phone. Should you consider a faster phone or a camera, you can add and even replace the hardware installed.
Motorola said, "The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter--or something not yet thought of!"
The video put up by Hakkens has been posted online for over a year and after the video has gone viral in social networking sites. Motorola and Google took the initiative to turn this brilliant idea into reality by creating this project.
"We've been working on Project Ara for over a year. Recently, we met Dave Hakkens, the creator of Phonebloks. Turns out we share a common vision: to develop a phone platform that is modular, open, customizable, and made for the entire world," as reported from the blogsite.
Meanwhile, ZTE has conceptualized and created a similar design and concept of the Phonebloks in which they named it the Eco-Mobius.
"You can replace the components yourself; the idea is to reuse as many components as possible," said Waiman Lam, ZTE USA's senior. "We've modularized the device in four categories: display, core, battery, and memory. You can upgrade the CPU to a higher-performance CPU just by taking out the module and sliding it in."
